Can It Be Stopped?

Rough Draft:     The debate over media violence has eluded definitive answers for more than 30 years. A lot of people try to study up on one fact. Does media violence really cause real-life violence? Many people love to blame video games and other media violence for all societal violence and try to censor violent content to protect children. Many see this as hiding the root causes of violence. Did you know that 61% of television programs contain some form of violence but only 4% of television programs with violent content feature an “antiviolence” theme to them? At least 43% of violent scenes in movies or television programs involve humor directed towards the violence. In these violent acts, we hardly ever hear of the person that does them getting into trouble. No one truly knows the reason for this but it’s what most people like. The issue of media violence is most certainly not getting any better or going away. If anything, it’s only getting worse. The worse the media gets, it seems that the lack of empathy for people in our society becomes greater.

Commentary:   I most certainly think media violence is a gigantic help to all the real-life violence. I believe that the more people make terrible video games such as: Postal and Grand Theft Auto, then more people may try to act out in life the way the characters did in the games, movies, or TV shows. I believe that if the media violence slowed down, the real-life violence just might do the very same. Then again, maybe not.

Analysis:   The author uses logos because he appeals to logic very well. He makes a very good point about how the media violence causes people to commit crimes or acts of violence.

Summary

Media violence in our day and time has become so bad and is becoming an influence on children and adults everywhere. Whether it be movies, television, music videos, internet, or video games, media violence is making an influence on todays society. The debate is mainly focusing on the “culture of violence” and the lack of empathy in our society that today, is almost slim to none. For instance, explicit pictures of dead bodies surrounded by pools of blood and slow-motion bullets exploding from people’s chests show just how bad our media violence is getting. These are just a few things that keep many viewers interested, but can also influence many. Even in the news, violence has become a big focus. When new shows start to air, the big thought on every producers mind is: “If it bleeds, it leads.” This is just letting everyone know that if it includes violence and/or death, then it should very well keep their viewers interested.
